Bilateral extrarenal calyces, renal pelvis and associated variations of renal vessels – A rare variation of the renal collecting system

چکیده
Introduction Bilateral extrarenal calyces, which are characterized by calyces and renal pelvis that lie outside the renal parenchyma, associated with variations of renal vessels is one of the rare anomalies of the collecting system. This variant may be associated with other variations of the urogenital system, like bifid kidney, ectopic kidney, horseshoe kidney and renal dysplasia. This could be caused by embryological factors. Patients with such variations may be asymptomatic in some cases; in others, they can develop hydronephrosis. Awareness about details and topographic anatomy of various variations of the urogenital system may serve as a useful guide for both radiologists and vascular surgeons. It can help to prevent diagnostic errors, influence surgical and interventional procedures and avoid surgical complications. We present a case of bilateral extrarenal calyces and renal pelvis with multiple variations in the renal vessels that were present in a 55-year-old African male cadaver.

Extrarenal calyces as a cause of non-functional kidney in a child: Case report
Originally described by Eisendrath in 1925, extrarenal calyces (ERC) are a very rare upper tract anomaly, with approximately 50 cases reported in the world literature, including this one (20%< 17 years).1 This malformation usually consists of a discoid kidney with the major calyces and the renal pelvis located outside the renal parenchyma, and it has been associated with other renal anomalies, ...

Introduction: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is associated with inadequate urine drainage from renal pelvis into ureter. UPJO results from incomplete recanalization of proximal ureter during fetal period which finally leads to hydrostatic distention of renal pelvis and calyces. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, ultrasound, and diuretic isotopic renogram. Various surgical metho...

Prolonged inflammation or irritation due to renal calculi can induce glandular metaplasia of the urothelium and even malignant neoplasm. Primary adenocarcinoma in pelvicalyceal system is a rare tumor in such patients. Here, a case of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) positive primary tubulovillous adenocarcinoma in pelvicalyceal system is reported. A 57-year-old male with right abdominal pain and ...
متن کاملExtrarenal pelvis mimicking hydronephrosis: a case for caution
Extrarenal pelvis is an anatomical variant that appears as a large hypoechoic mass just outside the renal sinus and can be confused with hydronephrosis, especially on a point-of-care renal ultrasound. Unlike hydronephrosis, it is not associated with dilated calyces, parenchymal thinning, hydroureter, or enlarged kidney per se.
متن کاملA report of anomalous renal blood supply
Vascular variations and the accidental cutting of veins and arteries potentially create problems during surgery and medical treatment. The surgeon's awareness of a vascular variation in the kidneys is essential during renal surgery and transplantation, color Doppler imaging, gonadal surgery and in the presence of an abdominal aortic aneurism. This awareness can improve the patient's recove...
